Vehicle Excise Duty

- A car propelled solely by diesel which does not meet the Real Driving Equivalent (RDE)
Step 2 standard will be subject to a first year rate equivalent to the band above the actual
emissions of the car, up to the maximum of £2,605 for 2023/24.
- An alternative fuel discount of £10 is available for alternatively powered cars, including
hybrids, bioethanol and liquid petroleum gas powered cars.
- All cars, excluding those with zero emissions, with a list price greater than £40,000 when
new will be subject to an annual £410 supplement on top of the standard rate for the first 5 years.
- Zero emission cars will be subject to VED from 1 April 2025, but only those registered from
1 April 2025 will be subject to the expensive car supplement.
